System features

Performance
Performance optimizations were made in order to speed up common tasks across all supported iOS devices. Tests done by Apple on an iPhone 6 Plus showed apps launching 40 percent faster, the system keyboard activating 50 percent faster, and the camera opening 70 percent faster.

Screen Time

A new feature allows users to track how much time they are spending on their devices and what they are doing. The system provides reports broken into categories and timeframes.

Shortcuts
A dedicated application in iOS 12 allows users to set up Shortcuts, automated actions that the user can ask Siri to perform. It replaces the Workflow app that Apple acquired in March, 2017.

ARKit 2
ARKit now allows users to share their view with other iOS 12 supported devices.ARKit 2 additionally allows full 2D image tracking and incorporates the ability to detect 3D objects.

CarPlay
CarPlay can now run third-party navigation applications.

iPad
iPads can now use the gestures that are found on the iPhone X. When pulling up the dock whilst in an app, this gesture is now used to return to the home screen.

The Voice Memos and Stocks apps are now available for iPads.

Control Center is once again separated from the app switcher on iPad.

App features
Messages
Messages in iOS 12 introduces a new type of customizable Animoji called “Memoji” which allows a user to create a 3D character of themselves. Apple also introduced Koala, Tiger, Ghost and T-Rex Animojis.

FaceTime
FaceTime gains support for Animoji and Memoji.

A future software update, slated for later in autumn 2018, will add the ability to include up to 32 people in a FaceTime conversation.

Measure
Main article: Measure (Apple)
Measure is a new native AR application that allows the user to take measurements. It also works as a level[10], which was a feature originally in the Compass app.

Photos
Photos now supports suggestions through a “For You” section and will make sharing recommendations.

Notifications
Notifications are now grouped and have a “manage” tab, to turn off notifications for that app or to deliver them quietly.

Do Not Disturb
Do Not Disturb now has a feature called “Do Not Disturb During Bedtime” to automatically send notifications to history, send calls to voicemail (can be changed to Favorites/Repeated calls) and has a darker screen to assist sleep. However, if the user taps the screen (or when the user’s wake time passes) notifications are shown.

Voice Memos & Stocks
The Voice Memos and Stocks apps are now on iPads. Voice Memos and Stocks have had a design refresh, and the latter has integrated Apple News.

Apple Books
iBooks was renamed Apple Books, and the app was refreshed, with a Discover Tab, Book Store, and more.

Safari
Safari receives an update to Intelligent Tracking Prevention. This includes a feature which allows the user to disable social media “like” and “share” buttons.

Maps
Apple Maps has been “rebuilt” by relying on first-party map data instead of using map data provided by third parties.

Screen Time
Screen Time is a new feature in iOS 12 that can record the time spent on the device as well as for certain types of apps.[citation needed]

Shortcuts
Shortcuts is a new capability in iOS 12, with an associated Shortcuts app that allows iPhone and Apple Watch users to use Siri to step through multistep routines. Shortcuts replaces the previous Workflow app that Apple acquired last year, and is designed to allow you to create custom commands in Siri that launch apps or combine a number of actions in a similar way to IFTTT.
